I have been running Untreatable Online for close to two years and over that period I have received comments that are full of hope, wonderful ideas and that go a long way to getting rid of the stigma that hangs over mental illness but unfortunately there is another side to the comments.
1. Spam Comments – Tons of comments that I receive will never make it on to Untreatable Online simply because the writer has nothing to offer to the conversation and is only interested in promoting their products. Lately it has been a lot of cure anxiety naturally or will away panic attacks.
2. I Just Don’t Understand Comments – In the last couple of weeks I posted an article from Oprah.com involving a seven year old girl who is dealing with schizophrenia and it was followed by comments that left me shaking my head. There has been at least seven comments left urging the parents of Jani to bring their little girl to a church where she would basically undergo an exorcism to get rid of all the “demons” that are causing her illness. It is almost 2010 and people still believe that mental illness is the result of demonic possession.
3. Hate Comments – Thankfully this category is a rarity and even more so after I put up that little statement on my comment section but for awhile Untreatable Online seemed to attract people who thought it was funny to kick someone while their down. Do they not watch “My Name Is Earl” and realize the power of karma. Like I said this type of comment is way down but I know this type of comment has led to more than one mental health blog writer packing it in and taking their story off the med.
I have a busy week this week with a doctor’s appointment, three nights of group meetings and a meeting with my counselor to end the week. Needless to say I am going to be pretty busy which is not necessarily a bad thing.
