Group Dynamics

It is now day two in the group I have joined through my local mental health association and to say that I am overly joyed at finding this new outlet would be a boldface lie. When people look at groups and they see all of the benefits that this support outlet offers needless to say they get pretty excited but there are two main factors that in the end will determine how successful a group is

(A) The facilitator – The person hired by the agency to put on the group and this area comes down to not how well the person presents the material for lets face it its not that difficult but by how they lead the group and more importantly the ability to pull the group back to the line they are suppose to be one. Basically if it is about facing your daily needs and 3/4 of the time is spent on someones sick cat there is a problem here. I have led enough groups to know the importance of making sure to get to the end goals. Side conversation that is beneficial to the group is very important as long as it is connected to what the group is suppose to be focused on.

(B) The other people in the group – I have never actually sat down and have been given a list of people and then told to pick the best people for said group for the environments I have worked in the people are basically forced to be there. The problem with mental illness is just because five people share the same diagnosis does not mean they are the same people in terms of dealing with the disorder, their survival techniques and their overall personalities. If you have certain personalities which we will call the me personalities where basically they have a story for absolutely every situation and attempts to get the entire group session to focus on them – I have been called a master manipulator by more than one person and the me personalities have me beat – the time spent in the group can seem to last forever.

Groups are a wonderful way to educate a number of people who can come together with similar experiences and problems and find a way to work to each persons individual recovery goal but they are not for everyone. I made a commitment to this new group so I will stick it out for the next seven or so sessions and I am hoping at the end it will teach me something new and get me that much closer to a state of recovery.

Bonus - I have started a new website that shows people how to make money online and it is the most easiest one, two, three process that you can imagine. Yep it is a bit of work at the beginning but once it is going it is completely automated. Throw in a couple of tricks I have learned through my experiences and it will speed up the entire process. Anyway check out http://terrys-new-website.com/
