I picked up a nasty cold the other day and after having a very long night of waking up due to coughing I decided to go to the local drug store. After looking around for a bit I decided on a med that has both one for waking hours and another for when you are asleep. I have taken this before so I knew it was pretty effective. I was about to head for the cashier when a thought appeared in my head that maybe I should ask the pharmacist about the interaction between the cough med and the drugs I take on a daily basis. My belief was the only danger would be a high rate of sedation with the night meds but turns out I was wrong.
I told the pharmacist what meds I was taking and asked if it was okay to take the cough med. After the typical look I get when I mention the medication I am on he stated that “I can not take a med that has a decongestant in it for it will make me dizzy, shake plus put my heart rate way up”. He found another med for me and hopefully that will work and it is a good thing that I asked.
I did read the warning of side effects on the cold medication and the only mental med they mentioned was MAOI which is a little bit concerning after finding out that there is a risk involved. So to all of you out there make sure you get a pharmacist or doctors clearance before adding any over the counter medication to what you normally take. Being sick is one thing but being sick and what appears to be a panic attack is a hell you really do not want to experience. Take care.
